The Requirements

To meet the basic qualifications for this position you will be legally authorized to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer of visa sponsorship. In addition, to be a good fit for the Maintenance Technician opportunity you should have:
  • A high school diploma; a 2-year technical degree is preferred
  • Solid experience in general manufacturing plant maintenance, ideally in glass manufacturing, including automation and robotics

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and the ability to read drawings and schematics; design experience is a plus
  • A track record of success organizing and leading maintenance/continuous improvement projects in production settings; experience with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma or similar methodologies is strongly preferred
  • Mechanical and electrical knowledge, including motors and motor drives, AC/DC controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, conveyor systems, etc.
  • The ability to:
    • Work and communicate effectively with employees at all levels within the plant organization as well as with PGW customers and suppliers
    • Learn and comply with plant security and confidentiality policies
    • Work productively and efficiently with minimum supervision
  • Self-motivation and a history of reliability
  • Experience with networking is a plus
  • Automotive industry experience would be helpful
We are currently hiring for the night shift, which runs Monday through Friday from 4 PM to midnight (with some flexibility). You will start on days for three to six months for training (the day shift is 6 AM to 4 PM). Our plan, in the near future, is to rotate days and nights between the two Maintenance Technicians.

We'll also expect you to be flexible, as you will need to work weekends and holidays on occasion, such as to support downtime events. This is a salaried non-exempt role, so you will be eligible for overtime.

The Role

Reporting to the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, you will join a team that includes one other Maintenance Technician as well as several General Maintenance Mechanics (GMMs). You will act as the direct leader of projects, coordinating with team members to establish project scope, implement changes, oversee final acceptance testing, overcome known design flaws and more.

Here in Elkin we transform raw glass into tempered and laminated products for use in all automotive applications, including windshields, backlights, sidelights and more. The facility covers 416,000 ft2 and includes multiple finishing lines, including hot end, cold end, tempering, value add and others. Equipment includes automation, robotics, furnaces, conveyors and more.

You will invest more than 90% of your time in continuous improvement initiatives. Quick question for you - click here You'll work in all production areas, coordinating with GMMs, production and others to schedule and execute activities during production downtime.

More specifically, you will:
  • Follow up, independently, on maintenance activities; when planned actions do not match actual results, you'll assess the realistic nature of the task and coach to completion when appropriate
  • Provide technical assistance to GMMs as the on-site training resource for developing GMMs
  • Attend meetings with Process Engineers and management to understand opportunities
  • Occasionally assist in contractor relations and parts ordering
  • Develop technical standardization opportunities for the plant such that variability in stores is decreased and design is improved, and also leverage lean principals overall for a more intuitive maintenance environment
  • Develop one central source for drawings, act as the keeper of the drawings and own all revision updates
  • Play an integral role in using lean Six Sigma for achieving plant 4 sigma
